Help with Scripture References:
Scripture references are easily the hardest part of memorizing Bible verses. Make sure to quote the reference before and after the verse. Also make as many connections and memory prompts as you can. Here are some I used for the body series:
II Corinthians is our eye verse. We have 2 eyes. Likewise, I John is our tongue verse. We have one tongue.
The ear verse is found in James. Papa’s first name is James and he has many brothers. The verse starts out, “My dear brothers.”
Sometimes I say the scripture reference in a funny way. For our shoulder verse I say, “Deuteronomy 33:12” in the same silly way every time. The kids have no problem remembering this one.
Imagine a muscle man named Phil. Now you have a memory aid for Philippians 4:13.
We have 3 verses from the book of Psalms. We have the tongue, the hand, and the foot. Making these connection helps with recall.
Isaiah has a wonderful friend named Luke. He has a good heart. Luke 6:45 is our heart verse and easy to remember when we think about Luke.
My daughter Hana is four. If a reference has a four in it we point to Hana while we say the number. Sometimes we hold up the proper number of fingers. With Isaiah, I point out things like “all the numbers are divisible by five” or other mathematical characteristics.
Our body verses begin and end with Romans. Roman soldiers wore helmets to protect their heads (or minds) and they were also known for their great shoes (the foot).
We know our verses well. What do we need to do to retain them?
Review them at least once a week. The body verses are easy to review. Start with the mind and travel down to the feet. This is a good thing to do in the car or while you are making supper or while smelting bronze (Brian’s suggestion). Sometimes if I am in a bad mood I “verse” my way out of it. This helps the kids too. When kids are fussy and no one is getting along, do ten spins and review some verses. Make sure the kids understand that saying verses is not a punishment.
Congratulations! You now know 12 memory verses. To celebrate, do something good for your body. We went swimming and then we did something amazing for our tongues. We ate ice cream.
Ready to try the next series of verses?

Love this idea! Thanks so much for coming to my blog and sharing this link!
